JWC in the NewsThe Jewish Women’s Center of Pittsburgh was hnored by The Islamic Center of Pittsburgh at its Humanity Day Award Ceremony on June 11, 2017. Read the article | Acceptance comments As'Salaam hu'Aleikem, The Jewish Women’s Center of Pittsburgh was created in 1993. We are an autonomous, member-led group of women whose purpose is to increase and enhance opportunities for Jewish women in learning, leadership, spiritual growth, and ritual practice. Our celebrations of holidays and the New Month focus on the role of women in Jewish history. We have created new rituals for Jewish women that mark important moments in their lives and that give a women’s perspective to rituals, especially those not previously included in traditional Jewish life. Fortunately, in the 25 years since, many of the efforts we have championed have become part of mainstream Jewish practice. Several years ago, we decided to focus our attention to new ways to fulfill the mitzvah, the commandment, of Tikkun Olam: to repair the world. Through our initial contact with the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh, and particularly with Julie Webb and later with Kelcey Sharkas, we feel fortunate, and indeed blessed, to have found like-minded women. Together, we have co-created avenues for Muslim and Jewish women to engage in holiday celebrations, to explore each other’s religious traditions and cultural practices, and to get to know each other on a personal level, as we share all these experiences. We look forward to continuing and deepening our connections with our Muslim sisters in our shared efforts to educate, to experience, and to energize our respective communities. I speak for the Board of Directors of the Jewish Women’s Center of Pittsburgh and for the members of the JWC in thanking you for this lovely and much appreciated honor. |
